Setiathome boinc9/2/2023 OF course we would exhaust our supply of "new" tapes first. We will soon be using a new "enhanced" application that could reuse the old data but use a much more intensive search on it. However stick around with us for a while. It is all "new" data to us even though it might be several years "old". The reason is that when tapes are pulled from the box to split into work units and process they are pulled in a random fashion from among all the unworked tapes available. Contrary to what some people think, yes we are using "old" data, some of it from 20, however it is all "new" in that we haven't crunched it yet. So I will just briefly address the data situation. I saw two replies appear to some of your comments as I started to write this. Whether you're running SETI, or Einstein, CPDN, Rosetta, or any of the other projects, you're contributing to science, and for that I thank you. But there's a forum software update due shortly that I understand will address that issue, among others. There is a search function, at the top right of that page. The Cafe is for everything else, by definition "noise" if you're trying to be serious about things. Number crunching is mostly about the process, hardware and software involved in the project on both user and server sides, and related topics. They're pretty assertive about keeping things on topic over there. There is some information in the Donations to the Seti project thread, also in Why classic is closing down and other facts of life.ģ: Would you care to define the "topic" that this forum isn't sticking to? The Science board is for threads on the Search itself, and related science topics. The last reason for not having new work is funding. After consideration, it was decided that they might just have worthwhile data in there after all, so they're in the mix also.Ĭurrently in Beta testing is an Enhanced update, which will do more in depth examination of the data. One exception to that, there were some early tapes that had not been fully processed because of what was deemed at the time excessive noise. They're still pulled out pretty much at random to get split. Because SETI isn't really a time-critical project, it has never mattered which tapes get processed when, and they had been backlogged in a box next to Matt L.'s desk in Berkeley. Welcome to BOINC, and welcome back to Right now, we're not reprocessing old units. Want to search the BOINC Wiki, BOINCstats, or various BOINC forums from within firefox? Try the BOINC related Firefox Search Engines There are plenty of projects that would like your CPU time, select ones that you're interested in (personally i like climate prediciton, LHC, rosetta, but suit your own interests)Īlso there is a search function (but you could always just use google), it's on the main message board page, right at the top the whole 9 yards )īut as for reviewing the software side of things, a positive first reaction. The forum is being developed as i type, by a very capable web dev team, soon the whole site will be revamped to use web standards etc. This is just bad forum software - no reflection on the project obviously, but to get and keep mre people who are really interested in contributing, this forum needs to be replaced. (Saying it would be a search for intelligence would be going too far but with some of the posts here I'm tempted.) There is no search facility (that I can find), and I'm sure that contributes to the FAQ problem and excessive posts. For this reason I've suspended further processing.ģ) This forum is high noise, low signal - if we applied to this forum it would indeed take a lot of WU's to sift through this mess to find on-topic posts. Thanks to anyone involved.Ģ) I'm disappointed that is really only (re)processing old units and that there doesn't seem to be much point in processing the current WUs. Here are my initial reactions.ġ) I like BOINC, good to have many projects using the same architecture. Many years ago I processed units with 386/486 systems, and now running over 3Ghz systems I figured I'd continue the contribution.
